Be Thankful For Good Health. Losing Your Ability To See Or Hearing Would Make Everything So Much More Complex And Stop You From Doing So Many Things You Like

Every person has diverse interests and hobbies which they get involved in over the years. Frequently these may be things which we find out about from adults we respect whilst we are children. Others we are introduced to by friends. Some we explore ourselves after hearing about them or seeing them on television and others may stem from jobs we have done. There are a number that we will lose interest in as we grow older and others that we can only become involved in once we reach a certain age.

I have a relative who has always spent her spare time sewing, and she has created some beautiful clothing in the past. But she is now having difficulties with her vision, and until the full scope of her problem is properly diagnosed, she doesn’t know if help is available to enhance her vision. But if nothing can be done, she will have to stop doing the thing which she enjoys most.

This got me thinking about some of my own interests and how a number of of the things that I enjoy doing would be affected if my eyesight became very bad or I started to go deaf. Since my very favourite passion is music – listening to it, going to watch my favourite artists live, going to music festivals and collecting music related promotional items, I can’t even begin to comprehend how I would feel if I could never listen to my favourite albums by my favourite musicians ever again.

But then, the majority of my other hobbies depend much more on my eyesight. I read a lot and always have a massive mountain of books which I like the look of and am trying to make the time to sit and enjoy them. I enjoy going out with my camera, so not being able to see clearly enough to get a good shot would be utterly demoralising in the first place, but then not even managing to see at all to manipulate the photos using software programs would be very distressing.

I enjoy watching a variety of different sports, and although I guess that if I was watching something on television, the commentator’s words would describe what I couldn’t see for myself, I’m not convinced that I would enjoy myself as much going to a football match if I wasn’t able to see myself what was occurring on the pitch. Another thing I enjoy doing is going to historical buildings, museums and art galleries, and I believe it must be truly awful to not be able to see outstanding pieces of art or interesting examples of architecture.

But that’s just some of one person’s pastimes! There are countless different things that people like to do in their leisure time, and the likelihood of being able to do a lot of them would be seriously affected if the eyes cannot focus properly. Much like the lady I referred to at the beginning of this article, any arts and crafts related hobbies would become hard to do as well as things including woodwork and DIY. Those who get involved in some sports or other outdoor hobbies, like rock climbing or bird watching, would find it far more difficult to keep enjoying themselves with defective eyesight.

Obviously, not all sight or hearing problems are untreatable or permanent, so most people can usually get back to what they enjoy doing once they’ve undergone diagnosis and treatment. On occasions that treatment can be as easy as taking drugs if the issue is the result of some sort of infection. On other occasions, external assistance can resolve things – a hearing aid, reading glasses, contact lenses and so on, but with some pursuits these are not practical. For an individual who gets involved in water sports and cannot have glasses or lenses due to the water splashing, Laser eye treatment is a possibility to enable further participation, and as far as surgical procedures are concerned, Laser eye surgery is one of the less costly operations to have done.

Other more complex complaints may take longer to diagnose and then require more complicated treatment, but, for the eyes, Laser eye surgery is a pretty quick and easy answer for some complaints. Also, for some kinds of hearing problems, surgery is a possibility too.

I have some minor vision problems which are solved by glasses (sadly Laser eye not usually available for my complaint), and I find it a nuisance regularly having to take my glasses with me, but just considering what individuals have to give up if they can no longer hear or see properly makes me appreciate the fact that I can still see clearly enough to do the things I like most, and luckily my hearing is just fine, despite decades of loud music!
